Building Strong Foundations in Worship and Production: Insights from Overflow Worship Podcast with Jake Gosselin

Welcome to an insightful episode of the Overflow Worship Podcast, where Andrea Olson welcomes Jake Gosselin, the founder of Churchfront, for a deep dive into worship leadership and production. Jake, a seasoned worship leader and tech innovator, founded Churchfront to address the needs of worship leaders who often face the dual responsibility of both leading worship and handling complex audio-visual (A/V) production. Together, Andrea and Jake share practical tips and heartfelt encouragement to help leaders thrive in their ministry roles with practical and effective strategies.

Churchfront: A Multi-Faceted Ministry Support System

Jake started Churchfront to bridge the gap between worship and production, especially for leaders in small and mid-sized churches who need help navigating ever-evolving technology. Churchfront offers a unique combination of YouTube-based educational content, personalized coaching, and hands-on system integration services. As Jake explains,

"Most headaches like that, you’re only a 15-minute YouTube video away from learning the 20% knowledge that gets you 80% of the results.”

His team provides a solid knowledge foundation, simplifying complex concepts and empowering leaders with actionable insights that fit their unique ministry contexts.

Key Resources for Worship Leaders

Jake emphasizes the importance of knowledge before investment, advising worship leaders to build foundational skills in sound, lighting, and video production before considering new equipment. He recalls instances where a few basic adjustments dramatically improved the sound quality without changing equipment:

“We just cleared all the settings on your console to default mode...it wasn’t even like we did anything magical.”

This approach underscores the importance of leveraging what you already have by understanding its full potential.

How to Know When It's Time to Upgrade

Churchfront's approach helps leaders assess when it’s time to upgrade and how to make these changes wisely. Jake describes a systematic process of evaluating the church environment, starting with the room’s acoustics, then the speaker system, lighting, and, finally, the mixing console. As Jake says,

“Audio is still the foundation…people in the room need to hear things clearly.”

By addressing these elements in a structured order, leaders can maximize their budget and impact.

Practical Steps to Assess and Improve Sound Quality

For those questioning the effectiveness of their current system, Jake shares simple tips for testing a space’s acoustics, like clapping to gauge reverberation. A space with excessive reverb can benefit from acoustic treatments to ensure sound clarity, especially with budget constraints. He also highlights that churches can often achieve better sound with minimal changes by focusing on room treatment, noting,

“It was a significant improvement to our sound when we added absorption panels to the walls of that room.”

Communicating Technical Needs to Leadership

One of the most challenging tasks for worship and tech leaders is gaining buy-in from their church boards or pastoral teams. Jake advises worship leaders to focus on the benefits that leadership will care about rather than diving into technical jargon. He explains,

“If you go to a leader and say, ‘This new mixing console…has all these mix buses,’ they’re just going to look at you and their eyes are going to glaze over.”

Instead, Jake suggests framing upgrades around congregational benefits, such as improving clarity in sound, reducing harsh frequencies, and addressing feedback from members.

Final Thoughts: Lead with Purpose and Simplicity

Jake’s approach is a breath of fresh air for worship leaders overwhelmed by production demands. By emphasizing education, methodical assessment, and clear communication, Jake equips leaders to transform their worship environments without unnecessary stress or expense. As he concludes,

“It’s like building a house…you gotta have a strong foundation to build everything else on.”

Leaders can feel empowered, knowing that with the right knowledge and support, they can create worship experiences that resonate deeply and authentically.

Whether you’re a seasoned leader or new to ministry, this episode of the Overflow Worship Podcast offers encouragement, practical tools, and a fresh perspective on navigating worship and production challenges.
